Project 1 - (Back pack)

here we are with our first project.

would love you to read carefully and study the materials needed before begining this project.

BACK PACK

Materials needed

  1. One yard fabric for outer layer (this is inclusive of the various colors you might want to use)
  2. ¾ yard for inner layer (this depends on the size of your splash back)
  3. Zipper (24” )
  4. Stiff (1½ yard)
  5. Thread
  6. Iron
  7. Sewing machine
  8. Seam ripper
  9. Measuring tape
  10. Scissors
  11. atrand of Elastic
  12. pins (to hold fabric together before sewing on the machine)
  13. strap belt for handle
  14. adjustable hooks for handle
Lets get started

Stage 1

Draft the pattern for your bag on a stiff, place them on the fabric for the outer part of your bag (both front and back of the bag). on the original pattern, add extra 1” (1  inch longer) to it to make up for the cut at the back of the bag which will be the point where the strap is joined to the bag)  This is shown in the picture below.

Also the splash bag has two outer pockets on the bag (pic 2 and 3). On your stiff, draw out horizontal lines for the lengths of the pockets (this can be either bigger than the one on this project) cut out the pieces for the pockets following the lines drawn on the stiff.

Note: you can draft out your pattern on a brown paper so you can cut out every piece for certainty before cutting out the stiffs and fabrics.

Stage 2

On your pattern draft out the inner pockets. (On this project, there are 3 inner pockets for pen, phone and a bigger one for maybe purse or anything other thin you so desire) the inner pockets is dependent on your choice of compartments.
Note: use a different color fabric to make it colorful.

Stage 3

Using the same pattern cut out the inner part of the bag. (The one we used here is kinda rough but will iron it before sewing onto the project) you can iron before cutting if the fabric is rumpled for accuracy. (pic 4). You don’t have to cut the back of the lining as we did here (not necessary) uses same pattern.

Cut out the sides of the bag, this is a two set cut.

Using a tape measure, measure round the full pattern of the bag (front pattern). The side piece that goes way under the bag should be at least 8-10 inches longer that the piece for the zipper (upper part of the bag). the sides should be at least 5inch wide, no matter the size of the splash back pack. (pic 5)

The side for the zipper is 1inch wider  and cut in half. The extra  inch is exhausted with the addition of the zipper.
Pic 6 is the strap of the bag, it should be 7inch wide and about 14inch long. Line with stiff and fold.

Stage 4

Arrange all front pieces together. Place stiff on a platform, place full front on it, place first front pocket (with the edge already folded by 1inch and stitched), place smaller pocket on it with its tip folded by 1inch and elastic placed inside the 1 inch fold.

Note: the elastic should be 2inch shorter than the width of this pocket

*Stitch the pockets in place.

Take the zipper sides and join all the way through. Join this to the other side of the bag. this in turn creates a pattern that is sewn all round the bag patterns (front and back) they are lined with stiff also. See picture below

Stage 5

Sew the folded strap and turn over with the hook in place Pic 7. attach them to the open part of the back and join all together.

Attach inner pockets to the lining. Pic 8 and 9

Stage 6

Same way the front piece were joined, do same for lining. See picture below. Note: do not join the zipper part all the way through. Leave the appropriate space with respect to the zipper length you have. As you can see in the picture it is opened for you to see the inside look.

Stage 7

Sew the back to the front half way so you can add the zipper.

Note: it will be easier to fix your zipper before joining sides.

Stage 8

Fix your zipper and open its portion with a seam ripper (do no open it all the way i.e the total length of the zipper)

Stage 9

Place the outer bag into the lining with stitched sides facing each other. The opening in the lining is placed on the zipper side and stitched.

If you followed me all this way, you are done with the project.
